About

WEARCOACH is an Erasmus+ Sport project that helps coaches turn wearable data into better training decisions.

A coach stands at the side of a training pitch at dusk, seen from behind, with a tablet in one hand. Athletes run past, and each leaves a line of blue light behind.

Aims

Heart-rate monitors, GPS units and other wearable devices have spread from elite sport and are now reaching grassroots, youth and para-sport. What holds back their effective use is no longer the hardware. It is knowing how to read the data and turn it into a training decision. The project's overall aim is to support the educational, professional and personal development of sports coaches by bringing wearable technology into coach education and training.

Three objectives

  1. Give coaches training and education on how to use wearable technology well.
  2. Test the training materials, the toolkit and the app with coaches in their own coaching.
  3. Share the results with sports organisations and coaching professionals across Europe.

What the project does

  1. Research

A review of the literature, a survey of coaches in Türkiye, Estonia and Norway, and interviews and focus groups, to find out what coaches need.

  2. Training programme

Five modules on using wearable data in coaching, for study at your own pace or for a course led by a trainer: a manual, slides and interactive exercises.

  3. Self-assessment toolkit

A knowledge quiz, a self-evaluation checklist, a 90-day integration plan and progress tracking, so that a coach can see where they stand and what to study next.

  4. Mobile app

A mobile app for coaches. Vidisport, a project partner, is responsible for it.

  5. Pilot testing

Coaches from grassroots to elite level use the training materials, the toolkit and the app in their own coaching. What they report is used to improve the final versions.

Results

The project has five outputs, and all five are for public release. An output that has a page on this site is linked.
